Types of carp fishing line

Carp lines aren't one size fits all, and the mainline you choose has a big effect on how well you cast, how you present a rig and wht you can feel whilst playing a fish.

Monofilament is the most popular choice for carp fishing, it's affordable, forgiving on the cast and has enough stretch to absorb a lunging take, making it a solid all rounder for most waters.

Fluorocarbon is denser and sinks faster than mono, so it's a good option where you need a line that hugs the bottom and stays as invisible as possible in clear water. It also has less stretch than most monofilaments, so can help stay in contact with the fish during a fight. It tends to be stiffer though, so can limit casting distances. Even though it is more expensive than monofilament, because it is more durable it is often better value where it suits your venue.

Braid has virtually no stretch, giving you direct contact with the lead and rig for better bite indication, and its thin diameter helps it cut through snags and weed, which is why it's favoured for marker and spod work as well as fishing tight to structure. What line should I use for carp fishing?

It depends on your venue. Monofilament is the best all round choice for most carp fishing, thanks to its forgiving stretch and affordable price. Fluorocarbon is better suited to clear, calm waters where low visibility matters, and braid is the go-to for marker/spod work, long range casting or fishing tight to snags, thanks to its thin diameter and zero stretch. It is also best to check the venue rules where you plan on fishing, as some types of lines are banned and there can also be a minimum requirement for breaking strain or diameter.
